INLAYS, ONLAYS, VENEERS AND FILLINGS

Inlays and onlays,

are restorations that are used to restore decayed and broken teeth. The difference between these restorations and fillings are that they are much stronger than fillings, and generally will provide you with many more years of longevity. Your dentist, at the first visit, removes decay or an old filling, prepares your tooth ,and takes a mold of the tooth. A temporary restoration is placed and this impression is sent to a lab where a ceramic or gold restoration is made. The inlay/onlay prepaired in the lab is placed with a permanant cement . The main difference between this restoration and a crown is the conservation of tooth structure. A tooth must be prepared more aggressively for a crown to make room for dental restorative material.

Porcelain veneers,

alternatively termed dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates, are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that are bonded onto the front side of teeth so to create a cosmetic improvement for a tooth. Porcelain veneers are routinely used by dentists as a way to make cosmetic changes for teeth that are discolored, worn, chipped, or misaligned. In addition to being esthetically pleasing, dental veneers can also serve a functional purpose by protecting the surface of a damaged tooth. In some cases, veneers may replace the need for a dental crown, eliminating the need for more invasive tooth preparation.

Composite "white" fillings.

Dental composite bonding is a popular choice for fillings because the material can match the shade, translucency and even the texture of your own natural teeth and provides a much better result than old amalgam/silver fillings, which can be unsightly when you smile. Cosmetic dentists often replace old metal fillings with tooth-coloured composite. There is much debate in dentistry as to the safety of mercury-containing amalgam fillings, and many dentists are of the opinion that metal fillings must be removed and changed for aesthetic composite fillings.
