DENTAL CROWNS AND BRIDGES
Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?
What Types of Crown and Bridge Materials Are Available?
The permanent crowns can be made from several materials, the most common are the porcelain fused to Nickel free metal, the porcelain fused to gold and the Zirconium.
1. Porcelain fused to metal crowns look like natural teeth and are stronger than the „all-ceramic” crowns. PFM crowns can be matched to your natural teeth so they provide an attractive appearance. Porcelain fused to metal crowns remain one of dentistry's primary restorations of choice because, when properly constructed and seated, they are very strong, reliable and esthetic. From single units to full circular bridges, porcelain fused to metal is an excellent solution.
2. Porcelain fused to gold crowns are stronger than the „all-ceramic” crowns. Because of the gold's warm color it is easier to mask with the porcelain and less tooth reduction is required to make them attractive. Gold will cast better producing a better marginal fit and it is more biocompatible. The gums typically have less irritation from gold crowns. It is recommended for both front and rear area, to substitute single tooth, to prepare partial or full dentures or bridges.
3. Zirconium is becoming the material of choice for dental crowns. It is a remarkably strong and reliable material which has a translucency that is very similar to a natural tooth. Light reflects from a Zirconium crown very much the same way as from the original ones.
This means that Zirconium will produce the best aesthetic effect, which is important if your new crowns are to be at the front, particularly when the crowns will be seen beside natural teeth. Zirconium it’s also an ideal choice for full dentures and bridges.

Bridges are made of porcelain and/or metal. There are many bridge designs:
The natural teeth on either side of the space are specially prepared for the crowns to fit on top. These crowns are permanently attached to a false tooth/teeth in the centre.
Implants on both side of the space. The crowns are prepared to fit on the abutment of the implants. These crowns are permanently attached to a false tooth/teeth in the centre.
A natural tooth on one side and an implant on the other side. The crowns are prepared to fit on the abutment of the implant and to fit on the other side on your natural tooth. These crowns are permanently attached to a false tooth/teeth in the centre.
If all teeth are missing or if majority of them are missing:
Your dentist may recommend a full porcelain bridge. The crowns of this bridge will be fitted:
